Mask Fitting

Course Description

Qualitative Respiratory Mask Fit Testing is a short, fifteen minute procedure that is a requirement for many school and workplace admissions. Getting properly fitted is essential for the safety of people working in an area where possible contamination is possible – labs, isolation rooms, et cetera. Mask fit testing is also mandatory for entrance to many Health Science and Nursing programs.

Our respiratory mask fit testing includes:

  • Respirator selection

  • Respirator limitations

  • Sensitivity test and fit test

  • Donning and user seal checks

  • Storage and maintenance instruction

  • Cartridge dating, change frequency, and limitations

Upon successful completion of a mask fit test, you will receive a certificate of completion which is valid for one year. Annual retesting is mandatory for most organizations and required by the WCB as to ensure the seal remains effective. Before coming in for a fit test, please ensure you:

  • Have not had anything to eat/drink (with the exception of water) at least 30 min prior to your appointment (this even includes gum!)

  • Have not smoked within 30 min of your appointment

  • Have removed any facial hair that will come between the seal of the mask and your skin (shave before your test!)

If the above guidelines have not been followed, we may ask you to reschedule your fit test
