HeartCode® BLS

HeartCode® BLS is an official, self-directed, comprehensive eLearning program from the Heart and Stroke Foundation (HSF). This program uses eSimulation technology to present realistic patient scenarios. Students are presented with five BLS cases and an online multiple-choice written exam. While interacting with the program, students assess each patient, formulate a treatment plan based on 2010 BLS guidelines, and provide treatment. Successful completion of Part 1, the online component, and Parts 2 and 3, skills practice and testing with an HSF BLS Instructor, are the requirements for obtaining a HSF BLS Healthcare Provider course completion card.

Students who are enrolled in the HeartCode BLS online Part 1 will receive online access to the BLS Provider Manual, the 2010 Heart and Stroke Foundation Guidelines for CPR & ECC and the 2010 Handbook of Emergency Cardiovascular Care for Healthcare Providers. Providers will have access to all information in the course for 12 months (one year) following activation of the course key.

Part 1, the online portion of HeartCode® BLS, focuses on what healthcare providers need to know to perform CPR in a wide variety of in-and out-of hospital settings:

  1. Initiating the Chain of Survival
  2. Performing prompt, high-quality chest compressions for adult, child, and infant victims
  3. Initiating early use of an AED
  4. Providing appropriate rescue breaths
  5. Practicing 2-rescuer team CPR
  6. Relieving choking

HeartCode® Part 1, must be completed within 90 days of initial log-in. Upon successful completion of the online portion, including the written exam, students receive a certificate of completion, which must be presented for Parts 2 and 3. In Parts 2 and 3, the student will demonstrate proficiency in providing BLS skills, including prioritizing chest compressions and integrating AED use.

HeartCode® Part 2, a hands-on skills practice session with an authorized HSF BLS Instructor within 60 days of completing Part 1.

HeartCode® Part 3, hands on skills test with an authorized HSFC Heart and Stroke Foundation BLS Instructor within 60 days of completing Part 1.

After you successfully complete all 3 parts, you will receive an HSF BLS course completion card, valid for one year.

It is important that students register for Parts 2 and 3 completer courses before purchasing their HeartCode® BLS Part 1 key (Click on Button at the very bottom of the page)

Any fees associated with skills sessions (Part 2 and 3) are sold separately and must be completed within 60 days of finishing Part 1.
